HI. I was wondering if a 3DS Max user could give me some tips on the best way to get mental ray custom shader icon to show up in the 3DS Max Material/Map Browser window. I created the properly named and sized icons using the icon creation details (http://docs.autodesk.com/3DSMAX/16/ENU/3ds-Max-Help/index.html?url=files/GUID-497D25CC-179E-48E3-A73E-A1B2E9D81CC0.htm,topicNumber=d30e559277) from the 3DS Max Help documents.

I have an existing lens shader named domeAFL_FOV that I am working on.

At this point I've created custom icons named domeAFL_FOV_16i.bmp and domeAFL_FOV_16p.bmp. The icon ending in _16i.bmp is the color icon. The icon ending in _16p.bmp is the alpha mask image.

I copied the BMP formatted icons to the Max 2013 icons folder:
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\<3ds Max version>\UI_ln\IconsDark

What do I have to do to make the custom icon visible?

Thanks,
Andrew Hazelden

You can't have custom icons in the material/mat browser or Slate. It's simply rendering preview of the shader.
Whatever they did to get custom icons for the Autodesk material is hardcoded, and isn't exposed to the end user in any way.

Hi Moulder6.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if that was the case.
