Default Material Definition Language examples for automotive

    Hi

If you want to get started in Material Definition Language (MDL) based material authoring, the following catalog of example materials might be of interest to you:

    https://s3.amazonaws.com/arcdownload...og20150219.zip

It contains a collection of materials targeted at automotive uses.

I will continue to update this post with installation instructions for different software packages supporting MDL.

To use the materials with Iray for Maya 2015

    • Download the catalog from the link given above
    • Unzip the archive, it contains 2 items:

    • Copy the folder automotive_catalog contained in the zip file into Iray for Maya's materialLibraries directory. For a default installation this is:
      C:\Program Files\[0x1]\IrayForMaya 2015\materialLibraries
It is important to keep the directory structure and naming intact to enable Iray to load the materials correctly!
    • Restart Maya
    • Open the material manager from Maya’s “Window” menu.

Anything that allows custom MDL usage should be able to use these materials. mental ray support may still be spotty in the current release is all.

There is more in the works. We are working on a larger library https://developer.nvidia.com/vmaterials
Its not out yet but i will notify you here about that.
Also there will be a way to get MDL content out of Iray+ for Max and other iray plugins. This will show up gradually during the beta period
Last but not least, Allegorithmic substance designer will soon be out with MDL export capabilities
