Default Launching NVIDIA mental ray for Maya

Today we launched NVIDIA mental ray for Maya. It is now available from nvidia.com in our online store and through select resellers. http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia-mental-ray-products.html

    So here’s what’s going on:

First, NVIDIA realizes you have come to count on mental ray being there for you – that every Maya user has it, you can coordinate with every Maya house on it, every student that learned Maya most likely has experience with it, and that you can load scenes from years ago and they’ll just work. To ensure this continues, mental ray will be absolutely free for use within Maya.
This means every feature and capability of mental ray will be fully accessible during an interactive Maya session (even saving .mi files). You can render and save still images in Maya at any resolution, without restriction, and mental ray will always use all the processors within your machine. You will only need a mental ray license for production rendering – which is defined as running mental ray outside of Maya, with a headless Maya, or using the Maya 2017 Render Sequence option.

The mental ray license is now universal – thus it can be used for any production rendering mode, with or without Maya. In being a network license (using the same Flexera license server technology you’ve been using with Maya) you can use it on any Machine or OS that you need and on your choice of supported Maya versions. This means there’s no longer a separate “mental ray Standalone” product, as Standalone is now just a production mode, along with Satellite, that can be used with the same mental ray license as you see fit. We are working with Autodesk to transition customers with active subscriptions of Autodesk’s mental ray Standalone over to NVIDIA licensing and support at no additional cost to them.

Licenses are annual subscriptions, allowing us to provide new functionality, across versions, without charging you each time, which also allows us to evolve mental ray more quickly. Single licenses are $295/machine/year, a 5-pack is $995, and there are greater discounts for +50 and +500 through Resellers. Machines containing a Quadro or Tesla GPU qualify to use a “Pro GPU” license for 1/3 the normal cost – so $95/machine or a 5-pack for $325. These Pro GPU licenses are local (tied to the machine) so the GPUs can be upgraded as needed. Only one GPU in the machine needs to be a Quadro or Tesla (of any supported GPU generation) to use the Pro GPU license.

Finally, schools and universities can apply for complimentary licenses to outfit their school machines and data centers with mental ray at no cost. The production pipeline use of mental ray Standalone can now easily be part of a curriculum.

Since we also now support this directly, for questions please use the new NVIDIA mental ray for Maya forum.
