Default Question about Mentalray no longer shipping with 3dsmax 2018

    The announcement is in
    http://images.nvidia.com/content/tec...et-FNL-WEB.pdf

Q: What’s happening to the Iray renderer thatused to come with 3ds Max?

A: The Iray renderer that historically shipped aspart of 3ds Max was actually a mode of MentalRay. This mode will be renamed Mental Ray Irayfor clarity, and will be included as part of MentalRay for 3ds Max.

What is this "Mental Ray Iray" mode? Will this mode be available in Mental ray for Maya as well?.. What the difference between this "Mental Ray Iray" mode and Iray for 3dsmax?

I'm researching on behalf of a software company and trying to get into the mental Ray for Max Beta community. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    wOLVERINe, good question.

There has traditionally been a mode of Iray that comes with mental ray. It is not as full featured as the regular full Iray with its own api. That full-featured Iray is what comes with Iray for Maya for example. The Iray mode of mental ray has traditionally not been enabled in Maya, and the required dlls don't come with what we ship today with mental ray for Maya.

To clarify use of the Iray mode that comes with mental ray in 3ds Max, we will call this Mental Ray Iray. Mental Ray Iray is what has been shipped in 3ds Max along with mental ray in the past. What was called Iray+ from Lightworks, now named simply Iray for 3ds Max (http://www.nvidia.com/object/iray-for-3ds-max.html), uses the regular full-featured Iray api.

Now, if you are thinking about what we envision you'd do to render a scene in both mental ray and Iray, as easily as possible, that is what MDL is about. Share the materials so you don't have to switch per renderer. Our vision is that will become easier and easier to do as we continue to develop this technology and its workflow across the renderers.

For production users, we envision a time where you could pick and choose Iray or mental ray for a given pass (render element for 3ds Max users) even within the same scene.

I'm also interested in the beta for mental ray for 3ds Max 2018 if it is still open. I currently use it daily in the studio and also teach it in a formal classroom.
