Default Withdrawal of NVIDIA Mental Ray and Mental Ray plugins effective November 20, 2017

We are withdrawing from general distribution of the NVIDIA Mental Ray and Mental Ray plugins effective November 20, 2017. We will no longer offer new subscriptions to Mental Ray for 3ds Max, Mental Ray for Maya and Mental Ray Standalone products. Customers with a current subscription on November 20, 2017 will be eligible for a perpetual license (without support or upgrades). Details can be found in our Mental Ray plugin transition FAQ about how to request this perpetual license. Learn More.

What does this mean for users of 3DS Max 2018?

Will the Mental Ray version we have (3.14.4. be a perpetual license? Or will Mental Ray stop working within 3DS Max 2018?

    Thanks

Within app rendering will remain free, as there was no licensing tied to that. The licensing was tied to batch, and standalone. That was a yearly subscription basis which was managed with the NV Pro App Center (PAC). You can contact NVIDIA as mentioned to extend that if you purchased it since last May when it was released. And you won't need it until that first year is up.

    Does that help?

Even the free mental ray is controlled by the Nvidia Professional Application Center. And they could pull the plug on that free license any time they want.

It'd be nice for some official reassurance that the free license will continue. Or else 3DS Max 2018 Mental Ray users need to find a new renderer.

No, and No. The PAC is merely a helper tool to simplify activating your product, install the license, show status etc. An issued license can not be taken back nor deactivated from the outside.

So what am I supposed to use now for render farming with backburner and 3d studio 2018?
