Lightbulb Mental Ray for Maya is free for interactive and still frame rendering, really?

    Hi all,

you may be aware that the NVIDIA Mental Ray for Maya plugin is free-to-use for
interactive rendering and rendering of final still frames. Only to unlock rendering of animations
with Maya Mental Ray Batch or Mental ray Standalone you need a license.

However, when you load the plugin in Maya, it "appears" to ask for a license because it forces
the so-called NVIDIA Professional Application Center (NVPAC) tool to pop up, which presents
a window that tells you "license status unknown" and how to "buy license" and "activate now".

You can safely ignore this window, and render with Mental Ray in Maya as usual.
The NVPAC tool can even be uninstalled if it disturbs your typical rendering workflows too much,
since it is a separate tool that the plugin does not depend upon.

Update: the latest version of the NVPAC tool (on Windows) does now remember
if it was running in the background with its main window closed. The next time you start Maya
the NVPAC tool won't pop up the window any more but just stay in the taskbar silently.

    Hope that helps,
    Steffen
